Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs, affectionately called also Swissys have lived for many centuries in Swiss Alps where they were bred as guard-, draught- or droving-cattle dogs.
Because of their fidelity, strength, good nature and rather large litters became popular at poorer farmers. Countryman who couldn’t afford to have a horse used Swissys due to their excellent characteristics, exceptional endurance in different weather circumstances and great abilities of pulling cargo. They started to call them ‘the poor man’s horse’.
They have a natural protective instinct to guard home and family. They adore their master and they would do anything to protect him. BUT they are NOT aggressive and they never bark without a reason.
